What Is Solar Infusion?
Solar infusion is a method of extracting beneficial properties from herbs or other botanicals into a carrier oil using sunlight. The process involves submerging dried plant material in oil and allowing it to sit in a sunlit location for several weeks. The gentle heat helps to release the plant's phytochemicals into the oil, creating a natural herbal infusion.
Solar infusion has been used by humans for thousands of years, emerging independently across global civilizations that recognized the sun's ability to gently extract beneficial compounds from plants. Ancient Egyptian papyri describe placing herbs in oils under the desert sun; medieval monasteries tended solar infusions alongside their food and medicinal herb gardens; Indigenous peoples of the Americas often combined solar infusion with ceremonial practices that honored both the plants and the life-giving power of the sun.
As industry evolved, so did solar infusing techniques. The Renaissance saw advances in glass-making that allowed for clear containers, while the colonial period saw practices travel across oceans as settlers carried herbal knowledge to new areas. Yet even as modern extraction methods emerged, traditional healers have always maintained that solar infusion produces uniquely balanced results that cannot be replicated through human-generated heat sources.
When dried herbs are submerged in a neutral carrier oil and exposed to consistent sunlight, several chemical processes occur:
Heat acts as the catalyst, softening plant matter cell walls which then release stored compounds—essential oils, alkaloids, flavonoids, and other beneficial constituents—into the surrounding oil. Unlike higher temperature extraction methods that can damage delicate compounds, solar heat provides the ideal temperature range (typically between 80-100°F) for extraction while preserving molecular integrity.
Sunlight contributes more than just heat—its full spectrum of electromagnetic radiation can influence the extraction process in subtle ways that artificial light cannot replicate. Some herbalists believe this solar energy becomes part of the final preparation, though the exact mechanisms remain part of the alchemical process that makes traditional plant craft so special.
The oil itself plays a crucial role as both solvent and a preservative. Lipophilic (fat-soluble) compounds readily dissolve into oils like olive, sunflower, or jojoba, creating stable preparations that maintain their potency for months when stored properly. Dried plant matter offers the best chances for success as the absence of water inhibits bacterial growth, extending the infusion's shelf life.
Solar infused oils offer concentrated doses of plant medicine in a medium that's readily absorbed by the skin and easily incorporated into wellness routines. Many flowers, herbs and plants can be used to create beneficial solar infusions, including:
Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) releases powerful anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing compounds that make its solar infusion helpful for treating minor cuts, dry skin, and irritation. Traditional use spans centuries across several continents, and modern research has confirmed Calendula's ability to promote healthy skin regeneration.
Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla) is prized for its calming properties. Solar infusion releases azulene and other compounds that give the oil a hallmark blue-green tint ; solar infused Chamomile oil serves as a natural remedy for everything from stressed skin to tension headaches.
Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) creates some of the most aromatic solar infusions, releasing its signature fragrance alongside therapeutic compounds. Solar extraction preserves lavender's delicate essential oils, making it a natural remedy for stress relief, minor burns, and restless sleep.
Here in Shieldmaiden's Sanctum, I personally use this ancient tradition to create my own solar infused oils which I then use when crafting my popular herbal salves. Each batch represents weeks of patient collaboration with the elements and our plant allies, yielding a magic all its own.
This process cannot be rushed—like all meaningful creations, solar infusion requires patience, intention, and respect for natural rhythms. This approach embodies my commitment to working with the old ways in this new world, and I love creating natural remedies that carry forward my ancestors’ herbal wisdom.
