Tomte, also known as Nisse or Gnomes, are Scandinavian spirits considered to be guardians or protectors of households. Often pictured with tall felted hats and long beards, Tomte bring luck to households that honor their presence, and play mischievous pranks on families that forget to leave them offerings of food and drink at the Winter Solstice (or Christmas or Yuletide).
